Summary

Background

  • The play about Pyramus and Thisbe, who were two lovers separated by a wall, begins.

  • Puck ends the play by saying that if you feel that the play was absurd, you only need to clap and imagine that it was a dream.

  • Once we get into the woods, Puck is introduced who is a tricky fairy who serves Oberon, the king of fairies. Oberon and his wife, Titania are in a fight which has the world turned upside down.

  • Because of this fight, Oberon makes a love juice that will make Titania fall in love with the first thing she sees.

  • While Oberon is in the woods, he spots Helena and Demetrius. Demetrius is trying to get away from Helena and Oberon decides that the roles should be switched so he gives Puck the love juice and tells him to give it to a Athenian man who is traveling with a girl.

  • Puck mistakes Demetrius for Lysander and accidentally gives Lysander the love potion instead. Lysander wakes up to seeing Helena and instantly falls in love with her. Puck also plays a joke on one of the actors, Nick Bottom, and turns his head into a donkey. This commotion awakens Titania and because she is dosed with love juice, she falls in love with Bottom who is now a donkey head.
  • A Midsummer Night’s dream is a comedic play written by William Shakespeare between the years of 590-1597.

  • It is about a group of events that surround the marriage of the Duke of Athens, Theseus, and Hippolyta.

  • These events include the adventures of four lovers and a group of six amateur actors.

  • This play is known as one of Shakespeare’s most famous work and is performed all over the world.

Characters

Summary

  • Oberon- He is the king of the fairies who is in a fight with his wife because she refuses to give him the young indian prince.

  • Titania- The queen of the fairies and Oberon’s wife.

  • Puck- He is Oberon’s jester who is a sneaky fairy who plays jokes on mortals throughout the play. He is the closest thing that this play has to a main character. He is deceitful, mischievous and playful.

  • The 6 Actors (Nick Bottom, Peter Quince, Francis Flute, Robin Starveling, Tom Snout, and Snug)- These actors were all chosen to play specific roles in the play for Theseus’s marriage celebration.
  • Meanwhile, Oberon sees Demetrius and Helena and dumps love juice on his eyes which causes him to fall in love with Helena. Now both of the men are in love with Helena instead of Hermia.

  • Oberon instructs Puck to fix his mistake and sprinkle love juice over Lysander’s eyes so that he will fall back in love with Hermia. Now the couples are happily in love.

  • Oberon easily got the young indian boy from his wife (who is in love with a donkey head) and decides to free her from the spell.

  • The next day, the Duke and his wife show up in the forest, ready to be married and they find the four young lovers sleeping. The lovers explain their love for each other and Theseus allows the couples to marry each other alongside of him and his fiancé.

Summary

  • Duke Theseus and Hippolyta are engaged to be married.

  • Egeus brings a complaint to the duke saying that his daughter Hermia can not marry Lysander (who she is in love with) and must marry Demetrius (who is in love with her). The Duke says that Hermia has until he gets married to chose to remain a virgin for the rest of her life, or to accept the death penalty for being disobedient.

  • Hermia and Lysander decide to run off to the forest together to get married.

  • Hermia explains this plan to her friend, Helena, who is in love with Demetrius, and because of this, she tells Demetrius their plan and the two of them decide to follow them into the forest.

  • While this is happening, a group of actors are planning to put on a play for the Duke’s wedding.
