In April of 1838 he was sent by Polding as a Vicar-general to what was known as Van Diemans land.
Here he built churches in Hobart and Launceston while continuing to visit the sick and the imprisoned.
He attempted to settle affairs in Van Diemans land regarding the church. He was not hugely sucessful.
Fr Therry became a very important person in the Catholic community. He became a source of moral and spiritual guidance especially for convicts.

One of Therrys mjor goals was to build the first Catholic Church in Australia. He succeeded. Governer Macquarie approved the plans for St Marys Cathedral in Sydney and its foundations were laid on 29th October 1821.
John Joseph Therry was born in Ireland in 1790. He is the son of John Therry and Eliza Connoly. He was educated at St Patricks College.
In 1815 John Therry was ordained a priest and did work around Ireland.
In 1820, Father John Therry and Father Phillip Connoly sailed to Australia, authorised by both the church and the state.
Father Therrys mission was to sustain and assist the Catholic community in the colony of NSW.
He travelled lots, visiting Irish catholic convicts who had been persecuted and sent to Australia.
When Phillip Connoly left for Van Diemans Land in 1821, Fr Therry became the only priest on the mainland for around 5 years.
Father Therry had an interest in the welfare of the Aboriginal people of Australia. He fought for their rights and was especially focused on education for Aboriginal children.
He continued his duties, visitinghte sick in gaols and hospitals and conducting masses while constantly fighting for those who he saw could not fight for themselves. Many Catholics at the time felt opressed by the Anglican Church and Therry saw the importance of inspiring the Catholic community.
Therry had spent his time in Australia bringing about justice and equality in the religious community. His impact at the time was huge.
Father John Therry died in 1864 and still remains as a significant part of Australias Catholic History.
