  • Tawhiao lived in several villages around Taranaki, but his hometown or the place he was born was at Orongokoekoea on the upper Mokau river
  • Tawhiao married Hera, the principal wife, Rangiaho and Aotea.
  • Hera had 3 children, Tiahuia, Mahuta and Te wherowhero.
  • Rangiaho had 2 children, Pokaia and Haunui
  • Aotea had only one child called Puahaere
  • Mahuta became the next king after his father, Tawhiao.
  • Tawhiao became king directly after his fathers death in 1860. He inherited the kingship and the spiritual leadership of his people.
  • He was king for the next 34 years and during his reign there were many conflicts and confusion between the maori and the british.
  • The british confiscated 1.2 million acres of the waikato land from the maori, so Tawhiao took his people and lived in Ngati Maniapoto territory, which soon became the King Country.

  • His mother was Whakaawi, she was Tawhiao's father's senior wife
  • Tawhiao had many half sisters and brothers due to his father's other marriages

  • Tawhiao's full name is Tukaroto Matutaera Potatau Te Wherowhero Tawhiao
  • He was named Tukaroto to commemorate his fathers stand at the siege of Matakitaki.
  • He was the eldest son
  • He was 2nd in line to the throne, after his father Potatau Te Wherowhero
  • He was from the Ngati Mahuta tribe
  • King Tawhiao was a strong believer of christ and he was well versed in the ancient rites of the Tainui tribe. Many people said that he had the status of a prophet.
  • Tawhiao was a great visionary, many said that his sayings were described as poropititanga, tongi and whakakitenga, which means prophetic, visionary or prediction of what could happen.

  • King Tawhiao was born around 1825 at the end of the musket wars
  • Tawhiao died on the 26th of August in 1894

  • During is young years in life his father raised him as a man of peace.

  • He went to bible school, which led him to know more about God and became closer to Him, which affected his decisions and his ways during his reign.
