The Trojan War is over and Odysseus and his soldiers begin their sail back home.
The Gods are not happy with Odysseus, other than Athena, who is a strong supporter of him. She convinces all the other Gods except for Poseidon to help him arrive safely home. Athena's actions establish her as a mentor to Odysseus.
On his journey home he masters the unknown world and the known world. He is now a master of the unknown world becuase he has made peace with the Gods and he prevails, despite all of the challenges.
Polyphemus and Poseidon both are threshold guardians because they try to prevent Odysseus from crossing the threshold of getting home.
During his journey he gained the gift of self-knowledge and humility. He also received the gift of a safe return to his family and his wife.
The Gods are furious with Odysseus because he does not respect them, and he does not appreciate how much they have helped him. Poseidon is extremely angry with Odysseus because he stabbed his son in the eye and blinded him.
Odysseus makes peace with the Gods and they forgive.
Penelope and Telemachus are both helpers for Odysseus because they are waiting for him to come home and are the reasons that Odysseus does not give up through all of the challenges and temptations that he faces. Circe helps Odysseus by feeding and bathing his shipmates. His mom and others in the kingdom of the dead help him by telling him what is happening in Athena and what is going to happen next on his journey.
Odysseus becomes more humble and shows more respect for others.
Odysseus had to go through many challenges to get home that help him develop new skills and improve old ones. He also has many temptations that he faces, such as wanting to stay with the beautiful Circe and Calypso. He also faces challenges such as the lotus eaters, Aelous, Laestrygonians, Sirens, the Cattle of Helios, and the Phaeacians.
On Calypso's island Odysseus is sad and realizes that he has not shown respect to the Gods and did not thank them for helping him.
