The Aztecs had two calendars, the sacred calendar, also called the tonalpohualli, and the solar or agricultural calendar,
the xiuhpohualli, which
is what one of the most
famous artifacts from
the Aztecs is.
The Great Stone calendar is currently in Mexico city and mostly follows our calendar. It has 18 months of 20 days which come out to 365 days. It relates events to the seasons.
Aztec Astronomy
The Aztecs were great Astronomers. Their calendars were extremely accurate and their Astronomy greatly affected their day to day life. Nobles and Priests would usually make predictions and calculations. They would track planets, stars and the sun in order to make their calculations. They used their predictions to track ceremonial days.
Aztec Worldview
The great stone calendar has allowed us an insight into the Aztecs worldview. This calendars accuracy shows us what great cosmologists the Aztecs were. It also shows how they value knowledge in their society. In the center is the god Tonatiuh and he has his tongue out to show he wants blood. This also shows the fear and respect their gods. Their other calendar is more about the gods which shows even more how they respect them. Another belief they held was that they should always expand and takeover. This affected their lives greatly.
The Aztecs named tall of their days and years. They may be named after many things, such as an animal, weapon, or plant. The year would be named the same every 52 years. The Aztecs calendar was very similar to the Mayans calender.
