During the 19th century several important leaders undertook important reforms in Hinduism, in an attempt to better align the religion with politics and social issues of the time.
Modern Hinduism continues to be a strong religion deeply rooted in the life of India, despite the lessening of tradition that has come about as a part of urban life. Many Hindus' faith has been strengthened by movie and television adaptations of Hindu epics and stories.
During this time period, Hinduism began to split off into many separate sects. This marked the beginning of the extremely diverse Hinduism that exists today.
The precursors of modern Hindus move into India. They bring with them a group of gods and beliefs which eventually became Hinduism.

In this period India was invaded from the north, and this influx of new cultures allowed Hinduism to gain greater definition.
In this period, the great epics of Hinduism were written and the Dharmashastras and Dharmasutras came into their modern form. Many of the great temples of Hinduism were built and many of the myths in the Puranas were created during this period.
The early 20th century saw the rise of the most famous Hindu leader, Mohandas Ghandi. Ghandi sought to impose reforms to better the lower caste of Hinduism, and to help strengthen Hindu resistance to British rule. India gained independence in 1947, and this success brought new life to the religion.
During this time period many great Hindu poetic works were written, which helped further define and shape the religion. Over centuries, Hinduism gradually shifted into its modern form.
