Foreshadowing

Symbolism

When the visitor tells the boy riddles, he is warning that the father is about to become abusive. This shows foreshadowing.

Theme

There are many ways to infer the theme of this short story, but I believe the theme was domestic violence. The visitor was there to warn the boy that his father was abusive, and it was going to get much worse.

Exposition

Person vs. Person

For years the family had lived without much disturbance in the house. One night a strange man came to the door. He said he had lived in the house during his childhood. The guest asked f he could look around, wearily the father allowed it. The guest visit became stranger as time progressed. He talks about his problems with his violent father. At one point he makes the strange comment ¨We have been dead- they've been dead a long time.¨

The falling action is when the father kicks the visitor out of his house. When the visitor is gone the father blames the mother for all that has gone on. The mother says Ï wasnt the one who let him in" and so the father hits her.

The visitor ends up barging into the the sons room. When he goes in he tells the boy riddles that will ¨all make sense one day.¨

The longer the Visitor stays the stranger he seems. With the stranger he seems the more the family wants him to leave. This visitor asks about personal details that show into the family's lives. With every question the tension of the story increases.

At first the visitor is thought to be the Antagonist, and the father as the protagonist, but as the story progresses the roles switch.

The Visitor

Comes across as a very strange man. Polite, but over steps boundaries.

Mother

Uncertain about others, but is a sweet person.

Born in 1938, in New York, Joyce has always had a love of literature. She started writing at the age of ten. When she was 31 she won the National Book award for one of her short story's
