Hamlet Soundtrack

by Kim Lichauer

Apologize by One Republic

I think this song can represent Hamlet's decaying relationship with Ophelia (and his friends). He used to love them ("got me ten feet off the ground") and now, when they try to earn his forgiveness, he is cold and distant towards them ("too late to apologize"). Now he trusts no one.

"Heavy In Your Arms" by Florence and the Machine

I think this song relates to "Hamlet" in one major way. "My love has concrete feet, my love's an iron ball, wrapped around your ankles over the waterfall" can relate to Hamlet and Ophelia's relationship with one another, because it is toxic and is slowly damaging the both of them.

"Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley

"Glory and Gore" by Lorde

"Ultraviolence" by Lana del Rey

I think this song can represent Hamlet being more in touch with his unstable side. "Yeah, I was out of touch, But it wasn't because I didn't know enough, I just knew too much" relates to him knowing about his father's murder and that IT was the source of his being "out of touch". This song is all about the singer recgonizing the craziness in himself and embracing it, something I think Hamlet has done since day one, pretending or not.

I think this song represents Ophelia's position throughout her battered relationship with Hamlet. "He hurt me but it felt like true love... Loving him was never enough." She is still friendly with Hamlet but their relationship is under a lot of tension and he really hurt her with his words.

I think this song perfectly fits Hamlet's whole story so far. "In all chaos there is calculation" relates exactly to what he is doing with his friends and family. "Now we're in the ring and we're coming for blood" pertains to Hamlet's eagerness to avenge his father. "We gladiate but I guess we're really fighting ourselves" relates to Hamlet's madness taking him over to the point where the audience isn't really sure if he's just pretending anymore.

"Ungodly Hour" by The Fray

"I'm So Sorry" by Imagine Dragons

I think this song is good at signifying the new dynamic between Ophelia and Hamlet and the distance she puts between the two of them. "And I am short on words, knowing what's occured, She begins to leave because of me." I think they both realize that this distance between them is because both of them are at fault and neither will admit it and now they do not trust each other, though they both wish they did.

"Blinding" by Florence and the Machine

"What Kind Of Man" by Florence and the Machine

"Who Are You, Really?" by Mikky Ekko

I think this song can signify Hamlet's relationship with Cladius. "No kiss, no gentle word, could wake me from this slumber, until I realized it was you who held me under". This "slumber" would represent Hamlet's depression and Claudius, who "held him under" was the one that shook him from this depression and gave him new purpose, despite how morbid of a motivation it was.

I think this song is another good example about how Ophelia feels in regards to Hamlet. "To let me dangle at a cruel angle, oh, my feet don't touch the floor" can represent Hamlet begins to confuse Ophelia with signs of affection and then cutting her with harsh words in almost direct succession. She isn't sure how to feel and wants to know why he's "loving" her like this.

This song perfectly sums up Hamlet slipping into madness. "So you're feeling tied up to a sense of control, and make decisions that you think are your own" can represent how Hamlet is thinking. He thinks he's in control of his decisions, when really, he's not. "I've got nothing left to prove, cause I've got nothing left to lose" represents how far Hamlet has truly fallen. He is at rock bottom with nothing to lose and nothing to gain but revenge.

This song captures the essence of what could be the source of Hamlet's madness: his anger at Claudius. "You'll never be loved till you've made your own... You never know the top till you get too low." I think Hamlet feel that he'll feel settled when the whole story is over and Cludius is dead, then he'll be open to love ("the top") again.
