Plan of Action

  • Place more trash/recycling bins around the area
  • Proper disposal of leaves and other waste
  • Maintain and repair septic tanks on a regular basis

Problems the Plan Might Face

  • As much as we would like, some people don't always dispose of waste in the proper way
  • Residents are finding quick ways to dispose of leaves without going out of their way
  • Maintaining a septic tank may become too much of a hassle for some residents and it's expensive

How Do You Know?

Pollution in the Ozarks

  • "The issue at the Lake of the Ozarks is...you've got a lot of old septic tanks... they need to be repaired..." (Templeton, 2009).
  • Bee Dampier, a nurse in Camden county states that E. coli comes from raking leaves and dumping trash in the water.

Why Should Anyone Care?

  • The lake is a popular tourist location and keeping it clean brings the tourists back year after year
  • Residents of the lake would like to live in a more clean environment
  • Fishermen care about the population of healthy fish in the water

Raking Leaves into the Lake

Ozark Pollution Issues

  • Leaves landing on top of the water disrupt photosynthesis for the producers
  • Residents tend to dump the leaves in the lake for convenience; offsetting ecological balances
  • Dumping waste
  • Septic tanks overflowing
  • Raking leaves in lake

Dumping Waste

Who Cares?

Energy Pyramid

Biotic VS Abiotic

  • Environmentalists
  • Residents
  • Fishermen
  • Wildlife
  • Tourists tend to dump their trash in the lake for convenience
  • Trash causes lack of sunlight to get to the plants and animals
  • Therefore, this kills off the wildlife when animals ingest the trash

Abiotic

  • Water
  • Trees
  • Woodlands around lake

Biotic

  • Fish
  • Groundhogs
  • Snakes
  • Birds
  • Frogs

Septic Tanks Overflowing

  • Septic tanks drain into the Lake of the Ozarks where people boat and fish
  • When overflowing of the tank happens, it largely affects E. coli levels
  • In 2007-2008, 310 cases of E. coli illnesses were reported along with 2 deaths
