The author uses many literary techiques throughout story. Here are some of them:
Foreshadowing is when the story tells the reader something that hints to an future conflict. There is an example of this in the beginning of the story. The narrator states, "My mother is the surviving half of a blindfold trapeze act..."
Figurative language is when the author is describing something and uses a similie or metaphor as a way of describing it. One use of figurative language in the story is this: " I hear the crackle, catch a whiff of smoke from the stove downstairs, and suddenly the room goes dark, the stitches burn beneath my fingers, and I am sewing with a needle of hot silver, a thread of fire."
Anna Avalon is a retired trapeze artist. She was forced to retire because she badly burned her hand and she had her arm broken. She is a kind-hearted and fearless person. She shows this by saving her daughter while her house was on fire.
The title is interesting because it could have different meanings. When you look at the title, it gets you thinking about what the story is about. The title hints at the theme by inferring that the main character might get something through hard work, or that the main charcter has something to do with being athletic.
The theme would be: Always help your mother. We say this because there is a recurring message about her mom and what she has done to save herself and her family. The daughter takes care of her mom because of that.
The narrator is the daughter of Anna Avalon. She is portrayed as a caring person reading to her blind mother. She is shown to be thankful, saying, "I owe her my existence three times."
This is story is told in first-person by Anna Avalon's daughter. This adds more emotional involvement to the story, since it is coming from a more personal view than it would be in a third-person perspective.
The first-person perspective also takes away from the story. The reason being is that we do not know some of the thoughts and feelings other characters had, which would have helped paint a better picture of the protagonist and other charcters.
