Stephen Fuller Austin was a Lawyer. He was son of Maria Brown and Moses Austin. Stephen F. Austin was born on November 3, 1793, in Austinville, Virginia. In 1821, he took over his father’s colonization of the Tejas region of Mexico. He died on December 27, 1836, in Austin, Texas.

  • Stephen F Austin settled in Texas in 1821.
  • He was still looking for people to settle with him.
  • Austin came to Texas because of his dad, Moses. Stephen wanted to settle over 300 families in from the US to Texas.

A lot of people settled to Texas in 1800's because they were open to slavery and had Tobacco farms. He took over his fathers settlements when he died.

It was not so good during the time Stephen lived ( 1800's ) because there was a lot of drug trading between borders. He also got arrested by the Mexican Government once because they thought he was forming a resistance to rebel.

Stephen F Austin was very successful. He brought hundreds of people to Texas. Austin used the poor economic systems of the other states to lure the people in to coming.

Texas was controlled by Mexican territory until 1836 when they gained their freedom. And in June 1821 Stephen settled his territory called Austin's Colony.

He settled on the river bottom between the Brazos and Colorado Rivers, south of the El Camino Real. The area of Austin's Colony included land that is now contained in 19 Texas counties.

People worked for long periods of time in life-threatening jobs but get paid very little. Even though the economic conditions were bad, he still managed to convince people come to Texas.
