Othello's Identity

  • Europe was ruled by monarchs and lords at the time. The Northern part of Italy was divided into ¨city-states¨. The most popular was Venice that survived 1,000 years and consisted a grand council.

It is uncertain which moor Shakespeare referred to.

Since Othello is black he is unlikely to be Arab.

The Aden edition of the play suggests that Othello could have been Arab or negroid African.

At the time England was anti-spanish which means anti-morisco too.
