Trade

Ancient Greek Economy

Trade is an important part of economy. Because of the geographic position of Greece and the fact that they needed to import certain goods like wheat, it made the Greeks start maritime trade. They imported goods from Cyrenaica, Egypt, Italy, and the regions surrounding the Black Sea. Other imported goods included papyrus, spices, fabrics, metals, and materials to build ships like wood, linen, and pitch. The Greeks traded wine, pottery, and olive oil. Athens traded metal coins and also other fabrics. Trade in Ancient Greece was free. People known as Emporoi were the main traders. Greece would collect a tax or duty of 1%-2% on the cargo and good.

Coins played several roles in Ancient Greek society. The basic Greek coin was called a drachma. They were used for wages, payments, metal value, and prestige for your standing in society. Currency and coins were one way of conducting economic business.

Labor is an important part of any economy. It is the relationship between people who work and those who employ the workers. Without workers, there would be no goods produced. There also has to be someone in charge of the workers to help the system function. Greece also had many slaves to do their work. This was unfair, but it was widely used.

The amazing crafts produced by the Ancient Greeks played an important part in their economy and culture. Pottery, sculpture, paintings, weavings, metal, leather, and wood working, and more were a big part of the community. These items were sold and traded.

Agriculture was the main employment for the majority of the Ancient Greeks probably at least 80% of Greeks worked in farming and agriculture. The production of Olives and Grapes for example were a key part of their society and a very labor intensive activity.

Capital in Ancient Greece consisted of many items such as fish, fruit, oils, precious metals and more. These items would then be used to produce other goods that could be traded. This would keep the economy at a good level and help people with work and production.

Land Resources in Ancient Greece were plentiful. These included all the naturally occuring items such as land, minerals, precious metals and gems, and more. This is important to economy because it helps people to create goods. Many people in Greece were able to use these items and many rich people had slaves to do their work so their profit was higher.
