“Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad, for the tree is known by its fruit. You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil.

for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” (Matt 12:33-37)

I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak

Bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.

Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors....

How/Why are we forgiven?

For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. (Matthew 6:11-14)

- Please forgive me the same way I've forgiven others.

Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

This is clearly a conditional forgiveness based on

our forgiveness of others.

Covenantal Confusion

Matt. 5-6: some of the harshest teachings in any world religion

Cut off your hand - Matt. 5:30

Pluck out your eye - Matt. 5:29

Be perfect like God - Matt 5:48

Sell everything - Matt. 19:21

Anger = murder - Matt. 5:21-22

Lust = adultery - Matt. 5:27-28

Calling someone a fool = Hell - Matt. 5:22

Don't forgive others = no forgiveness - Matt 6:14-15

But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. (Gal. 4:4-5)

For where a covenant is, there must of necessity be the death of the one who made it. For a covenant is valid only when men are dead, for it is never in force while the one who made it lives. (Heb.9:16-17)

“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world....“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.

For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins

no more. (Heb. 8:12)

Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.
