Encourage the student's need for requesting

  • Time delay- access to preferred item/activity is delayed until student makes a request
  • An item needed for the activity is missing
  • Delayed assistance- needed assistance is delayed until request is made

Access Issues

The AAC device needs to be positioned properly so that the student can access it consistently and intentionally.

  • Direct Selection involves point or grasping
  • Indirect Selection involves using a switch

6 Types of Prompts

1. Verbal

2. Pictures or Written words

3. Gestural (pointing)

4. Modeling (demonstrating)

5. Partial physical prompt (light touch or tap)

6. Full physical prompt (hand over hand)

*using the least to most hierarchy is recommended, start 1 end 6

  • Request reinstatement of preferred activity
  • Refuse a non-preferred activity/item
  • Choose between two items (both preferred)
  • Choose between two items (one preferred and one non-preferred
  • Comment on the activity or item
