Finland's Geography

History

Finland is in Northen Europe. Its neighbours are the Baltic sea, Sweden, Norway and Russia.

Finland is the Land of thousand lakes, because there are a lot of lakes in Finland. The largest lake is Saimaa and the highest mountan is Haltitunturi, it is 1328m high. Finland has 179 584 islands and a lot of forests too.

The winters are cold and dark and the summers are not warm but sunny.

-In 1156 Erik IX Swedish king became the king of Finnland too.

-In 1809 Alexander I. Russian tsar, occuped Finland but it became independent only on 6th of December 1917 .

-In 1918 Finland had a short civil war.

-In the II World War Finnland fought with the Soviet Union and Germany.

-In 1995 Finland joined The European Union.

People

Culture

There are two languages in Finland: Finnish and Swedish.

93% of Finland are Finn, 6% are Swede and 0,5% are Russian.

Sauna: Sauna is about 2000 years old. In Finland it is a "holy" thing. Everybody goes to sauna once a week. When they sit in the sauna, they do not wear clothes and they eat sausages and drink beer.

Films: they do not dub films and there are subtitles in two languages, in Finnish and in Swedish.

Nokia: It started in 1865 and the first phone was made in 1987.

The national sport is ice-hockey and they won the Word Championship in 1995 and 2011.

Finnish people like mushroom, potato and fish for example salmon and herring.

Their candy is salmiakki, it is black.

Their specialiti foods are: perunalaatikko, maksalaatikko, lanttulaatikko, silakkalaatikko.

At Easter they eat mämmi and on 1st of May they eat donut.
