80's Advertising and Consumerism

By: Rachel Thorn

The End

Food, Food, and more Food

Advertising was not only encouraging people to buy clothing or technology, it was encouraging food consumption. Now this is pretty typical of any era, but in the 80's, convenience foods were heavily marketed to busy families and promised that meal making would be a breeze.

The Rise of Cable TV

The 1980's in North America are considered the most consumer-driven decade in the twentieth century, with a huge increase in both government and consumer spending. Because new technology was being created, such as VCR's and the first video game consoles, it gave people plenty of expensive products they just needed to buy.

The television was the key marketing strategy in the 80's, as mostly everyone had a television set in their home. Cable was able to not only advertise products, such as furniture or clothing, it was able to advertise a lifestyle. Many TV shows in the 80's would follow the particular clothing or living trends at the time, and therefore inspired many viewers to go out and buy the same items as seen on TV so they could have their life be as wonderful and perfect as they had seen onscreen.

Jingle's and Themes

Many ad's of the 80's had their own music made specifically for the ad. Some ads were even sung! Music often made the ads, with happy, upbeat tunes. This allowed the ad to be more entertaining and catchy.

The Glamorous Life

80's television show's that depicted wealthy and glamorous lifestyles also encouraged luxury consumerism by creating a desire to live a similar lifestyle. Some of these shows include Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous and Dynasty.
