Oral Health Connection to Systemic Health Problems

-Having poor oral care can lead to other health problems

- When residents have decayed teeth and bacteria in their mouth, it can put them at risk for getting pneumonia.

-Also, having poor oral care can increase one’s risk of getting heart disease.

Patients that can do for themselves

Brushing and flossing is very important to the residents overall health. Their nurses should make sure that they are brushing and flossing at least twice a day. It is also vital that the residents visit their dentist or dental hygienist for a professional cleaning.

Importance

  • Residents in nursing homes who can do for themselves, can brush and floss their teeth daily by themselves but under the supervision of a nurse.
  • The nurses should encourage the residents to brush and floss daily.

Oral care is important no matter how old you are, which means that elderly people in nursing homes need to have the proper oral care.

Oral Care for Immobile Patients

-The caretakers such as the certified nursing assistants in the nursing homes should make sure that daily oral hygiene is assimilated daily.

- If the residents aren't able to do things by themselves then they should have the help of someone else.

Having healthy teeth is not just a cosmetic concern, but rather lacking good oral care can cause problems like pneumonia, cysts, infections, and gingivitis and other problems that can also lead to the loss of your teeth.
