Italy were the first to embrace the middle class where people earned their wages.

To be noble meant flaunting wealth and never having to work a day in their life, their display of wealth asserted dominance in the social classes.

Social Classes in the Renaissance

By April Dishno

Monarchs

Kings and Queens

Monarchs were the kings and queens who took responsibility in the welfare of all the people. Monarchs changed the power in society, controlling tariffs (taxes on imports and exports), taxes, army, parts of religion, and laws and judiciary. Nobles and the wealthy were scared of king's power and the middle class joined in favor of the kings for peace, while the kings gained money from taxes on the trade.

Nobles

Noblewomen

Noblemen

Fashion played a large part of how noblewoman were identified. Noblewomen held little to no political power and were seen as an extension of a noblemen. Their fashion was the only way to show independence and declaring one's social power. Another way to accentuate their power was through etiquette and behavior.

Nobles owned large pieces of land, and lived in large estates outside of the cities. Behaving according to the rules of chivalry was the key, and hatred to merchants was common. Power and wealth were shown obviously with lavish furnishings and beautiful pieces of art. They often sent others to do their work in fields and in the cities, never having to leave their lavish surroundings.

Middle Class

Shopkeepers and Professionals

Merchants

The merchants were the newly rich who gained money in the industries, such as wool processing, boat making, and banking. To protect their wealth, they married into noble families and controlled the government. With their new found wealth merchants became patrons of the arts gaining public favor.

Professionals were the ones who provided goods and services for consumption. They were the ones who had a skill, such as a blacksmith or an artisan. They generally had an education and had benefits of learning to read and to play instruments. Shopkeepers were the ones who owned stores and sold goods.

The Workers

The Lowest level

Work

The workers were the lowest level of workers in the social class of the Renaissance. They did not have stable jobs, and they were dependent on their employers. Keeping work was difficult and their wages could be withheld or could lose their jobs over simple mistakes.

These were property less workers that had low wages and were often unemployed. Living miserable tough lives where work was scarce, and they made up 30 to 40% of the population, some were still peasants who worked in the cities.

Peasants

Farming

Peasant Life

Serfdom was no longer in existence after the plague, so lords started to free their peasants and rent out their land to be farmed. Peasants began to gain more freedom and have a better life working, and able to start earning their wages.

As peasants their lives were the hardest in the social ladder, excluding slaves. Peasants lived in rural areas working on farms for nobles, bread was main part in their diets. They make up 85 to 90% of the population, work was hard and labor intensive.

The social classes of the Renaissance has shaped the way social classes are today, because today we have the middle class, the small percentage of largely rich, and poverty is still present.
