The First Bathing Suit

in the late 1800's and early 1900's, bathing suits were often accesorized with boots, people now, will generally use sandals and flip flops. these high rise boots, almost a slipper material, have long laces and they used them to protect their feet from sharp objects in the water.

at this time, ladies swimware were reduced to a two peice garment that had a long top which covered the entire stomach to make it look like a one peice. why, you may ask? ya, i have no idea. kinda makes the entire thing a little too complicated and pointless if you ask me. matching stockings were still worn but swimware began to shrink more so the flesh was shown more and more.

as of the early 1800's, railroads were introduced, thus causing people to swarm by the ocean-side beaches. at this time it was considred propper for peoples skin to stay white and to be untouched by the sun, even if you were hot and wanted to stay fashionable. this swimwear look consisted of face shading bonnets, and in september 1810, this swimsuit made its first appearance in a magazine.

Mid-eighteenth Century

towards the 1900's, this is when everyone started to do beachside activites which included water surfing, swimming, etc... which is why there was a need to create more freeing swimware, that allowed women to move around more and to swim without drowning. by 1910, bathing suits no longer disguised women as marshmallows and the fabrics that were used were reduced to show off the curves of the body and allow more exposure of sun to the skin.

now, bathing suits have changed quite a bit and quite drastically, and the swimware now is a huge jump from what it used to look like, and what types of fabrics were used. in the past, it looked like they used just regular cotton, and now we use stretchy, waterproof fabrics. the design that most people use is called a bikini and its the most popular type of swimware now-a-days, although, plenty of people still wear one peices. a bikini consists of very little amount of fabric which only covers the parts of the body that NEED to stay covered.

at this time, bathing suit designs have changed from before, but by a lot. the skin was still protected, but underneath of the flowy dress-like attire, there were huge pantaloon pants that were made out of heavy fabrics also. this design could definitely weigh down a swimmer.
