The Charles H. Best Diabetes Centre for Children & Youth was established in 1989 and was the first and only one of its kind in Canada – nurse-driven and community based. The Best Centre was set up to serve paediatric patients with Type 1 Diabetes, also providing education, diabetes management and support to families. Today, The Best Centre services over 1800 patients and provides children, youth and adults with comprehensive education and life skill instruction that is facilitated through individual sessions at the Centre and in the home. Crisis prevention through ongoing contact (through 24-hour pager, as needed) is provided for specific management issues.
In 2010, the cost of diabetes in Ontario was estimated to be approximately
$4.9 billion. In 2020, the cost is predicted to be $6.9 billion.
