Classroom Observation and Assessment
Present Level of Performance: Steve is currently working on a 7th grade GPS mathematics curriculum. According to his recent Key Math assessment, Steve is strong in geometry, having increased his level from 3rd grade to 5th grade. He has also shown significant progress in problem solving by increasing from 2nd to 3rd grade in foundations and 3rd to 4th grade in applied problem solving. In class, Steve demonstrates the ability to add and subtract positive and negative integers with and without manipulatives. Steve is comfortable using the order of operations and can use exponents and square roots with and without a calculator. Steve can explain the basics of Pythagorean Theorem and uses the theorem to solve for an unknown length of a right triangle. He can also simplify algebraic expressions with some teacher support. According to Steve’s KeyMath assessment, Steve continues to show strong mental computation and estimation skills but has maintained a 5th grade level for two years now. Steve maintains a 3rd grade ability in the following areas: numeration, data analysis, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, foundations of problem solving, and applications. In class, he struggles with determining when his answer should have a negative symbol. Additionally, he continues to have some struggles recalling the meaning and usage of scientific notation. When working in class, Steve receives specific instruction in math vocabulary and recalling basic facts. During testing, both in class and for standardized tests, Steve is allowed to use a calculator and has the test signed to him. With these accommodations, Steve did not meet expectations on the past two years of CRCT. This year progress monitoring and results of the benchmark assessments indicate that Steve is continuing to perform below grade level expectations. Despite Steve’s academic struggles, he is a motivated student and an active participant in class discussions and activities.
Evidence of Weak Work: Present Level of Performance: Math
Assessment: Jenna has computational math in addition to "real life" math.
Present Level of Performance: With the computational segment there are gaps in his ability to answer multiplication/division problems consistently. The weakest areas of his computation can be remedied through either usage of a calculator or daily flashcard practice on a daily basis at home. The real life section of class has focused on money and the tasks which adults have such as purchasing items, paying bills and keeping track of finances in general.
