The Death of a Low or Medium Mass star

The Life Cycle of a Star and the HR Diagram

After a low mass star as becomes a red giant the outer parts grow bigger and drift into space forming a cloud of gas called a planetary nebula. The blue-white hot core of the star that is left behind cools and becomes a white dwarf. The white dwarf eventually runs out of fuel and dies as a black dwarf.

The Life Cycle of a Star

All stars start as nebula's. A nebula is a large cloud of dust and gas. Gravity then pulls some of the gas and dust in a nebula together. The contracting cloud is then called a protostar. A protostar is the earliest stage of a stars life. Stars are born when the gas and dust from a nebula becomes so hot that nuclear fusion starts. When a star is "turned on" it is known as a main sequence star. A main sequence star begins to run out of hyrdogen fuel , the star becomes a red giant or a red super giant .

The HR Diagram

The Hertzsprung - Russel diagram. Its temperature is measured in kelvin. the x-axis is the temperature and the y-axis is the brightness. The large number (+15) means dimmer. The smaller number (-15) means bright.

The Death of a High Mass Star

When a super giant explodes it is called a supernova. After it explodes some material is left behind and

may form a neutron star. Neutron stars are the remains of high mass stars. The most massive stars become black holes when they die.

The way you can remember the seven main stars are by "Oh be a fine guy/girl kiss me."

Picture of the lifestyle of a star.

Main Types of Star

There are seven main types of stars in order of decreasing temperatures (O,B,A,F,G,K,M). O and B are uncommon stars but very bright.M stars are very common but dim.
