Retrieval Failure Theory

Why is retrieval failure sometimes called cue-dependent forgetting?

Explain how TOT provides evidence supporting the Semantic Network Theory

Because it occurs when information has not actually been lost from long term memory but rather an ineffective cue has been used to retrieve it.

Tip-of-the-tongue Phenomenon

Information in Long Term Memory is organized and connected in logical ways which links the retrieval failure memory theory to the semantic network theory.

Retrieval Cue: A Retrieval Cue is a prompt that help us remember. When we make a new memory, we include certain information about the situation that act as triggers to access the memory. For example, when someone is introduced to us at a party, we don't only store the name and appearance of the new acquaintance in our memory also use external ques such as who made the introduction and what sort of party it was.

The tip-of-the-tongue phenomenon is the failure to retrieve a word from memory, combined with partial recall and the feeling that retrieval is imminent.

What is the significance of the TOT phenomenon in terms of memory?

The TOT phenomenon illustrates several aspects of the retrieval processes. Retrieval is not an all or nothing process, it is a partial process where bits of information can act as further retrieval.

When experiencing a TOT what information can we usually retrieve?

When we are experiencing a tip-of-the-tongue we can usually retrieve rhyming words, how many syllables the word has and what it does or doesn't start with.
