Sarah Villani

Giovanni ( John) Villani

Giovanni (John) Villani migrated to Australia in the year of 1943. He lived in Italy until he was the age of 10. He lived along with his father, older sister, mum and his younger brother Peter. John and his family left Italy in 1953 for the reason being they were offered a new and improved life in Australia, as well as the fact that the Villani’s had many friends and relatives already here in Australia.

Sarah Villani migrated to Australia in year of 1961. She lived in Scotland with her mum, dad and four brothers. At the age of 13 in the year of 1961, Sarah and her family migrated to Australia, ever since then she has been an Australian Citizen. There were many different reasons the family’s migration, one of them being is because there was no work being provided for the parents. Sarah is now currently retired because she is unable to work.

Sarah and her family all came out to Australia by boat all on one person’s passport which was her mothers. They left Scotland in hope for a much better life to be provided for them which is what happened. There was no work for the parents as well as children but as they arrived to Australia, Sarah discovered a job very quickly just after a year that they migrated, which was working in a fruit shop. Sarah and her family didn’t receive and racism, in fact everyone in Australia made them all feel extremely welcomed.

Johns father decided it was best for him to move to Australia 2 or so years before the rest of the family came, for the reason for that is because he wanted to try and have as much as he possibly could before john, his brother, his sister and his mother all came to live in Australia with John’s dad.

When Sarah migrated to Autralia, she didnt experience any racism at all. Her and her family were very lucky to not experience any.

When John migrated to Australia, he experienced a fair amount of racism. He was called a ‘wog’ which is an offensive term that many Europeans are called. He was also known as ‘dago’. He was experiencing all of this hate at the age of ten and at this time in his life, he couldn’t speak any English at all.
