King Charles II is restored to the throne of England. With the Restoration of the English monarchy and the diminishing power of the Puritans, the theaters finally open again. But the Globe is never re-built.

The Puritans (a group of English Protestants) tore the theater down because they believed that theaters were evil and should not have existed. All theaters in England are torn down. If anyone was caught at a play they were whipped and charged.

Under the force of the Puritans, parliament issues an ordinance suppressing all stage plays.

Right to Perform

1601

Background Information:

  • The Lord Chamberlain’s Men’s had lost their lease on Blackfriars Theater in 1597 and had no place to perform their plays
  • Shakespeare's plays were very popular in the Queen Elizabeth's times. They made many productions of them like Macbeth, The Merchant of Venice, Romeo and Juliet and Henry V.
  • In the theater they didn't have bathrooms. If you needed the use of a rest room they would use a bucket.
  • Where you would sit in the theater said a lot about your social status
  • This all takes place in the Elizabethan Era that experienced the rise and fall of play houses
  • 1591 the growing popularity of theaters led to a law closing all theaters on Thursdays so that the bull and bear bating industries would not be neglected

Opening of the Theater

1599

The Globe Theater is opened, it was located on the South bank of the river Thames in Southwark.

Building the Theater

1597-1598

The Globe Theater was built by carpenter Peter Smith and his workers. It could hold up to a thousand people and was considered one of the most magnificent theaters in all of London.
