Economy of Germania

"If I thought the Germans had no right to cross into Gaul against my will, why should I claim any power or authority on the German side of the Rhine."

- Julius Caesar, Caesar's War in Gaul, 4.16.4

  • Agriculture was a vital part of the provinces economy.

  • Most Germans were farmers, but a large portion were hearders.

  • Rome exported fine pottery, glass, and metalwork across the Rhine. In return, raw materials such as amber, leather, and slaves went back.

Germania Superior

Historical Narrative (Cont.)

(Germany, France, and Switzerland)

Germania Superior came under Roman rule after the Gallic Wars in 83bce while Pompey, Crasus, and Caesar were a triumviate.

  • Caesar conquered the region in 58b.c. during the Gallic War

  • Augustus, in the initial years of his rule, grouped Germania Superior and other Germanic regions together under his direct governorship because of the belief that they were in danger of insurgence.

  • Augustus intended to combine all of Germania into a super province called Germania Magna.

  • Constant expeditions were made to fortify Romes control over Germania Superior.

  • Remained insurgent until supressed by Augustus and became a base for military expenditure.

  • Remained a province until 400c.e., 76 years before the fall.
