The arts and crafts movement developed in Britain during the late 19th century and was distinguished by a style of decoration reminiscent of medieval times. The primary artist associated with the movement is William Morris, whose work was reinforced with writing from John Ruskin. The movement placed a high importance on the quality of craftsmanship while emphasizing the importance for the arts to contribute to economic form. The style is associated with many different types of design including architecture, typography, book printing, textile and interior design.
Book design and typography declined in quality, and many mass-produced goods were cheap and of poor quality. The Arts & Crafts Movement began in reaction to the pitiful artistic quality of the Industrial Revolution in Great Britain. It was also a socialist reform movement, which embraced artists, architects, designers, writers, and crafts workers of all types. Followers of the Arts & Crafts movement promised to eliminate the commercial system, believing that industrialization alienated labor and created a dehumanizing distance between the designer and manufacturer. The movement gave attention to design and a return to hand-craftsmanship.
Both arts and crafts and heroic realism uses shape, color, emotion, and emphasis combined as a way to relate and stress a specific point or message to an audience. They both are used for expressing ideas while using creativity.

Heroic Realism is defined as a realistic style that sends out messages to the civilians to have them notice the world around them especially in the communism society. The government was newly formed and it needed to be recognized. It promotes an ideal with a strong message. Usually the design includes realistic imagery, bold print and features only one person or thing. The main way heroic realism has been used in design was in propaganda posters. that format is still widely used today in design. The use of heroic realism graphic design has been used in movements like the civil rights movement as well as womens rights movements. Designers have used photographs with or without texts to express strong messages. Currently this style is used in political campaign posters, billboards to raise social consciousness and even to create branding for certain products an services.
This style of art has changed and developed over centuries. In the early 1900s, it was used more in political ads, and in today's time, it is used and reflected worldwide on covers and in super hero movies. For example, Superman was the story of the mythical hero originally championing the every man against crime, politicians, and crooked industrialism, he was very much the form and function of heroic realism. It is timeless in this present age. Another example is how the U.S. army uses commercials that showcase the benevolent acts of those in the army as cool, proud, and adventurous. This inspires many young people to join to feel respected, admired, and be apart of protecting the country.
