Walter Lee Younger

Color: Walter's color is no doubt a bright, irritated red, just like the red that flushes your skin when you scratch it. This color fits him perfectly, considering he's a very irritated person. But the color red doesn't just describe anger, it also describes love and pain. Even though Walter is rough, he does love his family, and red is the color of hearts. For pain, blood is bright red, and obviously Walter is in pain. Anyone in that family's situation would be in pain, with stress and sadness and sometimes hopelessness.

Shape: Walter's shape is a pyramid. I chose a pyramid shape to represent Walter because it shows how he views himself in a dominant way. To walter, he's at the top of the pyramid and everyone else seems to fall below him. He tends to think immaturely and selfishly and fails to consider other peoples dreams. He also fails to be a good leader for the rest of the family. He also believes that he is the man of the house and all the money belongs to him, when really mama's in charge.

Setting

The Dream

If I was married to Walter Lee, I would end up divorcing him. Walter is a rough character, he loves liquor, which affects him greatly. Walter Lee also seems to enjoy picking fights and starting debates with the other family members, especially mama. He's also a desperate dreamer, he hopes to open his own shop and get out of the poor situation his family is in.

Walter's never ending dream is to invest into opening a liquor store, and instantly becoming rich. He talks to his son, Travis, explaining to him how after he makes a transaction, seven years later, him and Ruth will "go up to your room to see you sitting on the floor with the catalogs of all the great schools in the world" and will provide Travis with any school he wants.

Walter's dreams are obviously big, and focused on money and providing an "out" for the situation he's in. He's waiting for some light to shed on the darkness of his life, he's waiting for a sunrise.

I chose an rusty anchor stuck at the bottom of the sea to represent Walter. I picked this picture because I saw Walter as the anchor, stuck in an ever-changing sea. The sea represents the struggles he has, such as alcohol and money. In the picture, Walter is at the bottom of the sea, representing how his problems are drowning him. The alge on the anchor shows that Walter has been in his position for awhile and is waiting for someone or something to pull him out.

Bumps in the road

Walter's dream is big and glamorous, especially for his situation, but he still believes he can do it. There are many bumps in the road though, that make it even harder to accomplish his dream. One problem is mama and her money. When mama's husband died, he left ten thousand dollars behind, and Walter automatically decided that he wanted most of this money to open his liquor store. When mama bought the new house, Walter was upset, believing that all that money was his money. Then, mama gave him $6,500 to save for Beneatha's medical school and what he wanted. Instead of putting this money in the bank, he made an immature move that ended up losing all the only and basically losing a huge chance at his dream.

For Walter's animal, I picked

a dog, or more specifically, a rottweiler. I chose this

animal because dogs have a mix of emotions like we do.

I specifically chose a Rottweiler because I own a Rottweiler, and I've noticed that she shows very simular characteristics to Walter. She is very moody most of the time, she also constantly picks fights with my other dog like Walter picks fights with mama or Ruth. Also, even though most of the time she can be moody, she can also be the most optimistic, excited and happiest dog in the world, just like Walter. Also, dog's moods change in an instant, kinda like Walter's. Lastly, just like Walter, dogs are very suspicious of new comers.
