Quebec supported Roman Catholic rights, Manitoba refuse to obey the federal government to interfere with its laws and Ontario supported Manitoba.

Divisions within the cabinet also made

decisions impossible.

Manitoba’s Liberal government, under Thomas Greenway, abolished public funding of Catholic schools and French

as an official language in the province.

Bowells cabinet began to question him as a leader and realized he wasnt fit to be one.

Seven ministers from his cabinet stepped down, forcing him to resign.

A system of Protestant and Catholic Schools had been established in Manitoba based on the BNA Act that ensures minority education rights prior to the crisis.
