Birth of the Minotaur

-King Minos was the king of Crete

-Followers, the Minoans, were named after him

-His palace was located at the heart of Crete, Knossos

-King Minos was viewed as fair

UNTIL.......

One day, several people raised doubts about King Minos’s right to the throne.

One year, Theseus volunteered himself to be the Minotaur's food.

He, along with thirteen other terrified children, slowly made their way inside.

To prove he was the true king, he asked the gods to send him a sign.

Theseus had hid a spool of yellow yarn in his hair.

-He used this to track his steps so he could have a return path.

Instead, King Minos offered one of his ordinary bulls from his own herd.

When Theseus encountered the Minotaur, he remembered that the Minotaur could not be killed with a club, knife, sword, or spear.

To kill the Minotaur, he attacked it with his bare fists and defeated it.

When Theseus returned to Athens he was proclaimed King.

But he did not accept!!

He refused to rule in a society where one person had absolute power.

INSTEAD...

He organized the first democracy!

The citizens elected officials through a popular election where all people were...

EQUALS!

Displeased with his actions, the god Poseidon made King Minos' wife fall madly in love with the sea bull.

-As a result of their affair the Minotaur was born.

King Minos and the Minotaur

By: Samantha, Jamie, & Tiffany

King Aegus sent Androgeus, King Minos' son,on a dangerous mission to fight a large beast that looked similar to a bull.

BUT...

The bull easily tore apart the boy and ate him.

The boy's father, King Minos, threatened to invade King Aegus' kingdom for vengeance for his innocent boy's death.

To prevent King Minos from starting a war, King Aegus offered to send seven boys and seven girls to King Minos every nine years.

They all died a horrible death, because they were fed to the Minotaur.

King Minos ordered Daedalus to construct a convoluted labyrinth to jail the Minotaur to help keep the Minoans safe.

-Inspired by the infamous winding river Meander...

Daedalus made a labyrinth with a thousand doors and so many twisting paths that no one could find their way out.

The gods agreed and had a beautiful white bull emerge from the sea off the coast of Crete.

King Minos was to sacrifice the bull at once as a sign of pleasure and obedience.

He (King Minos) INSULTED the gods!

This resulted in the birth of the

Minotaur!
