Recent Updates about the wolf hunt

For or Against the wolf hunt?

  • 50 wolves have been taken so far in the early season

Many people are dead against it and cannot see the point of why some people want it to happen.

Hunters believe that it is necessary to keep the wolf populations low because then they will start killing off other species.

Population

  • The current population of wolves in the lower 48 states is 6,110.
  • The Quota for the number harvested is around 400 animals, each and every one taken will be registered to the state
  • When the quota is reached the season will stop
  • The Early Hunting season is 16 days long and the late hunting season is set for 68 days of hunting/trapping
  • The current population of gray wolves in Minnesota is 2,981 wolves

Economics

Minnesota Wolf Hunt

  • 23,000 people applied for a tag from around the US, only 6,000 people got a tag to hunt or trap the wolves
  • The cost per tag is $30 for residents and $250 for nonresidents
  • At 5% of the tags, $75,000 will come from out of state hunters and trappers
  • The amount of money gained from residents is just over $170,000

Problems for the Environment

  • The main food source for the wolves are deer, so what happens when they eat all of the deer?
  • When they eat all of the deer in a particular area they will be forced to expand to find more food, causing wolves in more urban areas.
  • What happens when the wolf population expands?
  • They start relying on other food sources such as pet and other small game.
  • They will eventually become accustomed to living near humans and will eventually be forced to turn on people
