  • He was born in Amherstburg,upper canada(Ontario).
  • He practiced Medicine but occupied himself with real state, furs and retail trade.
  • He settled at the Red River Settlement in 1861.
  • He became the leader of the Canadian party which demanded annexation to Canada and which roused Métis fears.
  • He was imprisoned by Riel’s provisional government on December 7, 1869 but managed to escape on January 23n 1870.
  • Went to Ontario where he and others of the Canada First movement raised Protestant over the execution of Thomas Scott.

Irony:

The families of Riel and Dumont had sad endings in the epilogue and the metis too.

Stereotypes:

The white men wear classy clothes .

  • In the summer of 1869 He arrived at Red River and found employment as a labourer on the “Dawson Road” project, a new road connecting Red River to Lake Superior.
  • He allied himself with John Schultz’s Canadian party which promoted the annexation of Red River to Canada.
  • He was employed by the Canadian government as a surveyor during the Red River Settlement
  • Captured and imprisoned several times by the Métis, he was court- martialled and executed with the Metis approval.

Satire:

Riel decides to not chase the english mens.

Caricature: Thomas scott's mouth was shaped horribly it emphasized the swearing and bad language coming from his mouth.

  • the bias in the novel is when Louis Riel was in the battle of batoche he didn't really lead the people in the battle He is just praying.

Brief Summary

Historical Truth

The Red river settlement was sold by the Hudson's bay company to canada. It made the métis angry not knowing their land was sold to the white man, they elected Louis Riel as their president to help them out take their land back. after the execution of Thomas scott, Riel returned in the Red river and won the election and has made Him a member of the parilament. A canadian surveyors began dividing the Métis land, Riel and Dumont sets up and armed rebellion against the Canadian government. The metis was then defeated in the Battle of Botache. Riel surrendered Himself to the government and was executed because He was found guilty of High Treason.

Execution of Thomas Scott

Thomas Scott and his group were captured by Riel’s men and held in Fort Garry. While held at Fort Garry, Scott continually insulted the guards and threatened to kill Riel if he was ever freed. A Métis court voted to execute Scott and Riel went along with their decision. On March 4, 1870, he was convicted, sentenced to death and executed by a firing squad in the courtyard of Fort Garry.

Discrimination is one of the major themes of the story it shows how the white people treated the Aboriginal people unfairly.

Violence was too strong in the story that causes more bad events.

  • The rights of the métis was denied by the Canadian government which causes them to make a rebellion.
  • They were called half breeds and not considered canadian.
  • The Canadian government is ignoring the métis letter regarding to their land which is taken from them without giving them an info.
  • The execution of Thomas scott which made the white avenge his death.

it symbolizes the conflict between the aboriginals and the white men.

It justified the violence that was going on.

It symbolizes the power and authority in the story.

It is used effectively in the story, the government of Canada has all the paper that made the métis powerless.
