Recreation and Leisure in the 1950's and 60's was the stepping stone to what is now some of the most popular recreation/leisure activities today. From basketball to the popularity of music a lot can be attributed by the starts they had in the 50's and 60's. If not for these things, it is anyone's guess as to what kind of things we would do for recreation/leisure today.

Music

  • In 1956, Elvis Presley released the hit song "Heartbreak Hotel". Elvis went on to change the face of music with his rock and roll music throughout the 50's and 60's

  • In 1965 The Beatles first toured the United States. The Beatles were one of the most influential sources throughout the 60's.
  • James Brown introduced the world to Soul music with the release of his frist song "Please Please Please"
  • Music was widely influential and gave both men and women something to listen to for fun

  • In 1957 windsurfing got introduced giving beach lovers a new leisure activity to enjoy
  • In 1968 the first ever Special Olympics took place. The Special Olympics is a great example of the impact of recreation and the positive things that come from it

  • In 1956, Walt Disney famously opened Disneyland. To this day Disneyland continues to be an immensely popular recreational tourist attraction that draws in people from around the world.
  • In 1954, Color TV broadcasting is launched allowing men and women across the nation to be introduced to show such as 'I Love Lucy' and 'Tom and Jerry'
  • In 1955, the first McDonalds is opened in Des Plaines which made for a new way to eat with friends

Women's Impact

  • With the merger of the NBA and ABA in 1949, basketball grew in the 1950's and became wildly popular to men and women all around the world. Basketball continues to be one of the most popular recreational activities in America today
  • In 1955, Rosa Parks famously refused to give up her seat on the bus. This led to the surge for civil rights for all. If not for her bravery, life in general would not be the same today.
