Information
The Gas Explosion happened on Friday Oct. 20th 1944 at 2:30 in the afternoon.
In Cleveland east Ohio, tank near lake earie.
The gas explosion killed 130 people and destroyed
1 square mile.
This was the worst disasters in the city's history
The gas tank did not have "normal" gas in the tank linquified natural gas (LNG).
And to sum it up,a tank full of natural gas exploded, destroying everything. Flames went high as 2,500 feet in the air. The blaze continued uncontrolled for over nine hours.
Cause of the failure
The cause of the failure was that since World War 2 was still going on and they
could not provide steel to build the tank. So they used an alloy instead. And because
it was awfully cold, the alloy could not withstand it to contain the LNG and therefor
a leak was developed. And the gas then started to escape, and a fog was formed which creeped into the sewer systems as well.And so, the cause of this MASSIVE disaster was ONE alloy.
