Technology as Poiesis: Applicable to Modern Technology?

technology is not instumentum so where instumentality reigns, there reigns causality

Aristotle's metaphysics of causality or the four causes

causa materialis

causa formalis

causa effecience

causa finalis

since Poiesis + Techne = revealing

Technology's essence is that it reveals aletheia or truth to us. Yes but no because modern technology goes beyond causality

Modern Technology reveals something different.

ARE WE WORRIED ABOUT MODERN TECHNOLOGY? THE ESSENCE OF MODERN TECHNOLOGY BECAUSE WE ARE SCARED OF WHAT WE CREATED INTO THE WORLD?

in modern technology, it is not Bringing forth anymore, it becomes Challenging forth.

Modern technology is different. We go beyond poiesis and towards techne. Unlike earlier times when man simply brings forth, now man challenges forth.

We use, manipulate resources, nature to manufacture, to create, or to reveal technology that is man-made.

Enframing is the essence of modern technology. Enframing is when we see how nature should fit with us than how we should ship with nature. instead of allowing nature to give, and to reveal on its own, we enframe and take its sources for granted and appropriate them as standing reserve.

Human flourishing in science and technology

in the pursuit of human to a good life, he/she may unconsciously acquire, consume, or destroy what the world has to offer. Science and Technology must be taken as part of human life that merits reflective and as Martin Heidegger says -- meditative thinking.

Technology is defined as:

1. means to an end (instumentality) , and

2. human activity (anthropological)

Learning Objectives:

Technology as Mode of Revealing

HOW IS TECHNOLOGY REVEALING?

In Heidegger's work, technology is a poiesis that discloses or reveals the truth.

Technology reveals the world as raw material, available for production and manipulation.

1. discuss what technology reveals

2. examine modern technology and its role to human flourishing

3. explain the role of art in a technological way

4. critique human flourishing vis-a-vis the progress of science and technology

Heidegger in The Question of Technology highlights some points:

1. technology is NOT a means to an end,

2. Technology is NOT a product of human activity, and

3. technology is the highest danger

it is not a means to an end, not an instrument. rather a techne or as greeks say, "helping to come into being". and here, we touch with Aristotle's metaphysics.

it is not a human activity because we should not see that we humans are the source of the creation of every entity in this world.

it is the highest danger because First of all, there is the danger that humans will also interpret themselves as raw materials. If we want to move towards a new interpretation of being, this would itself be a technological intervention: we would manipulate our manipulation, exerting power over our way of exerting power.
