5 Interesting Facts

  • In 2010 a UK team from the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton (NOCS), equipped with an autonomously controlled, robot submarine, began mapping the full extent of the trench and discovered black smokers on the ocean floor at a depth of 5 km (3.1 mi), the deepest yet found.
  • In January 2012, the researchers announced that water exits the vents at a temperature possibly exceeding 450 °C (842 °F), making them among the hottest known undersea vents.
  • Researchers announced the discovery of new species, including an eyeless shrimp with a light-sensing organ on its back.
  • Submarine earthquakes sometimes occur around the edges of the trench.
  • The Cayman Trench is unconnected to the world's other mid-ocean ridges, which are formed by separating tectonic plates.
  • There are still many unknown creatures in the Cayman Trench that havent been discovered yet.
  • Depth of more than 4 miles

HISTORY

The pre-Cretaceous history of the Cayman Trench has been extrapolated from the Paleozoic-Mesozoic geology and structure of Central America and Cuba, while the Cretaceous to Holocene evolution of the trench has been related to the relative motions between the North American, South American, and Caribbean plates.

Biome and Animal Life

  • Some of the world’s deepest deep-sea vents are found in the Cayman Trench some 5 km (3.1 miles) below the surface of the ocean.
  • Beebe Anemones, Shrimp Galore, and Von Damm Shrimp.
  • There is and upwelling of deep, nutrient waters and developments of fringing reefs and patch reefs.
  • The Cayman trench lies between latitudes 19 and 20 North, closer to the equator than some people realize, so the climate is warm and humid with little seasonal variation.
  • Relative humidity varies from 68% – 92% and rainfall varies with the season.

Description

  • The relatively narrow trough trends east-northeast to west-southwest and has a maximum depth of 25,216 feet (7,686 m), the deepest point in the Caribbean Sea.
