People travel and move to foreign environments for many different reasons. This involves crossing cultural boundaries
What are some examples for crossing cultural boundaries you can think of?
Cross-cultural adaptation theory focuses on the act of establishing and maintaining a relatively stable and reciprocal relationship with the host environment through adaptation.
When we experience stress from being in an unfamiliar cultural environment we gain the ability to communicate in accordance with the norms and practices of the host culture and actively engage in its social communication processes.
IT IS BASED ON THREE ASSUMPTIONS (“OPEN-SYSTEMS”)
1. Humans have an inherent drive to grow and adapt.
2. Adaptation to one's environment occurs through communication.
3. Adaptation is a complex and dynamic process.
How do these assumptions shape our understanding of the process of cross-cultural adaptation?
What results from the process of cross-cultural adaptation is a blending of old and new. This helps individuals to fit into the receiving community, whilst still maintaining elements of their own culture.
In order to understand the process of cross-cultural adaptation, we need to understand the definition of culture. What is it?
In order to begin the process of cross-cultural adaptation, enculturation, acculturation, and deculturation must occur.
Take 10 minutes and research what they mean.
In order for the process to be effective individuals need to demonstrate certain characteristics.
1. A sense of personal, social and cultural identity.
2. Empathizes with and appreciates the diversity of cultures.
3. An ability to effectively communicate across cultural divides.
4. An awareness and sensitivity to major domestic and international issues.
So lets discuss;
- Is this process one which is occurs rapidly?
- What elements/factors might speed this process up?
- Are people aware this process is occurring?
- What impact does this process have upon the receiving community?
