KEVIN RUDD'S APOLOGY

February 13, 2008

The Method

THE AIM OF THE APOLOGY

Australia’s original owners, The Aboriginals, demanded for an apology to occur for the land that was stolen from them by protesting on the lawn of parliament house. Due to this demand, Kevin Rudd made a pledge as a part of his 2007 campaign to apologise to the Aboriginal Community on behalf of the parliament for the past Governments actions. Thus, when Rudd was elected, he made a formal apology on the 13th of February 2008 before parliament as a bipartisan decide.

The Outcome of the Apology

Whilst the Aborigines were grateful that The Prime Minister made the apology, there was still more to be reconciled.

"We thank Kevin Rudd for the apology five years ago, but since then we've been seeking compensation and we've been fighting for it very, very adamantly. On the other side of it we're still looking to address the other 47 recommendations from the Bringing Them Home report because only seven have been fulfilled yet."

On February 13th, 2008, Aboriginal people across all Australia were deeply moved and in tears: The Prime Minister of Australia, Kevin Rudd, had finally apologised to the Stolen Generations and said ‘sorry’. The aim of Kevin Rudd's apology was to recognise and reconcile with the Indigenous Australians due to the invasion of the Europeans and loss of identity.

"To the Stolen Generations I say the following. .. As Prime Minister of Australia I am sorry. On behalf of the Government of Australia I am sorry. On behalf of the Parliament of Australia, I am sorry. We offer this apology to the mothers, the fathers, the brothers, the sisters, the families and the communities whose lives were ripped apart by the actions of successive governments under successive parliaments."

Further Outcomes

Kevin Rudd's apology brought about Rights and Freedoms as the Aborigines were acknowledged for their loss of identity and culture as well as recognising the wrong doings performed by The European Culture during settlement. The Indigeous Australians pleaded for centuries that they deserved an apology to be only be given no recognition, however in 2007 Kevin Rudd pledged to make the apology within 100 days of being elected. Thus, Aborigines gained the right of being accepted and  in society and recognised for theirr own identity.
