Bacterial Meningitis

What is it ?

Meningitis is the inflammation of the membranes that outline your brain and spinal cord.

How do you get it ?

Most meningitis is caused by bacteria and viruses that often live in our bodies. Usually these germs stay in the intestines or in the nose and throat, where they may or may not make us sick.

Treatment/ prevention

Is it contagious ?

The germs that cause bacterial meningitis are spread from person to person. Some bacteria can spread by exchanging of saliva or spit (for example, coughing or kissing)

Doctors treat bacterial meningitis with a number of antibiotics. It is important to start treatment as soon as possible.

What are symptoms ?

  • high fever
  • stiff neck
  • severe headache
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • sensitivity to bright light
  • confusion
  • a rash of purple discoloration

Is it curable?

Early diagnosis and treatment will prevent brain damage and death. Bacterial meningitis is treated with intravenous antibiotics
