Dorothy Johnson began work on her theory “the Behavioral System Model” in the late 1950’s (McEwen & Wills, 2014, p. 146). Dorothy Johnson was born in Savanah, Georgia in 1919. She received her Bachelor’s degree in nursing from Vanderbilt University in 1942 and then a Master’s degree in Public Health from Harvard in 1948. Dorothy Johnson developed the Behavioral System Model. In the model, Johnson viewed human beings as having two major systems: the biological system and the behavioral system. She believed the role of medicine should address the biological system and that nursing should focus on the behavioral system. She devised four assumptions about the human behavioral subsystems. In these assumptions she states “there is organization, interaction, interdependency and integration of the parts and the elements of the behavior that go to make up the system” (Gonzolo, 2011, p. 4). The purpose of Johnson’s system theory is to establish the role of the nurse. “The nurse creates a balance between client and environment to achieve an optimal level of functioning” ("Current Nursing," 2011, p. 20).

Patricia Benner was born in August 1942, in Hampton, Virginia. She was the middle child. She had two sisters. Her family moved to Ontario, California, where she and her sisters completed their high school education. Her parents got divorced when she was a sophomore. Although that was a hard time for her and her sisters, she became interested in becoming a nurse and worked as an admitting clerk at Saint Luke’s Hospital while in college. She went to Pasadena college. But Pasadena College did not offer a major in nursing, so she transferred to Pasadena City College which was where she got her associate of science in nursing degree and she also got her bachelor's degree in 1964 from Pasadena College. She continued her studies and earned her master’s degree in nursing from the University of California in San Francisco in 1970 and a PhD at the university of California at Berkeley in 1982.
