What is a modern day witch hunt?

Terror in Opelika

Those in attendance of the Opelika-Auburn game Friday night had a very frightful false alarm. When a fight erupted between students on the Opelika side of the stadium, someone nearby shouted the word "GUN" causing several nearby students to take off running, causing the cheerleaders on the sidelines to run. They were soon followed by the football players, the Opelika student section, and the band. Many Opelika fans were hysterical from fear, others extremely confused. The police later returned everyone to their seats and assured people that there was no danger and that there was no evidence of there having been a gun.

Think back to Salem in 1692. Everyone was suspected of being a witch. We like to call these people crazy for being so afraid of something that may or may not have been true. However, a closer look at our history will reveal that we have a lot in common with those "silly" Puritans.

Modern day witch hunts erupt from situations that cause mass hysteria, usually starting with people who just follow the crowd and don't know what they're scared of. Often this resulted in people being persecuted because of fear.

Ebola, a virus that is transmitted by bodily fluids, effected Americans due to interactions in poverty-filled West Africa. The few Americans who caught the virus were quarantined and had extensive background researches done to insure that a large outbreak would not happen in the U.S. The scare is due to the lack of a cure as well as a chance of death if infected.

They first were able to meet together at a prison camp controlled by the U.S. The main leader became Abu Ahmed, who stated that the war in Syria was the perfect opportunity for ISIS to grow, also Baghdadi, who is the main militant leader. ISIS sought out to teach the Qur'an and to start a new age of Iraqi rule. Abu Ahmed started to have regrets as he grew older because of the brutality that ISIS had on everyone. ISIS even started to try and plan another 9/11 type attack, but has never been carried it out. The main issue is that they are muslims so if anyone looks muslim then they are singled out as being a terrorist.

Ted Bundy mostly attacked college girls, one of the closest to Alabama being FSU. He killed at least 36 women in the 1970's all around the U.S. The most chilling characteristic of Bundy's was that he seemed normal, charismatic, and handsome. He was also a very clever trickster, he would pretend to be hurt in order to get girls alone with him.

With the upcoming 14th anniversary, we look back on the terror and hysteria.

Contrary to popular belief... not actually cold in temperature.

After WWII, anti-Japanese paranoia drastically rose. Many Japanese Americans were living on the West Coast. Due to suspicions of every person of Japanese decent, even American citizens, President Roosevelt ordered all Japanese people to be relocated to concentration camps.

The Cold War was the period of time after World War II where there were tense relations between America and Russia. America was weary of Russia's communism, especially with the red scare happening in the U.S. The "war" included a serious nuclear threat as well as the possibility that Russia would try to overtake the U.S.

September 11, 2001 is one of those dates that will always stick with Americans. Four airplanes were hijacked by members of islamic terrorist group, al-Queda, in result more than 3,000 people were killed. Citizens in the U.S. were terrified. Would this happen again? Airport security was tightened and a fierce racial prejudice to people of the Islamic religion grew. The Hunt for leader Osama bin Laden started and then ended on May 2, 2011 with his death.

As the years leading up to "Y2K" approached, people all over the world started to become uneasy because computers at this time were unable to acknowledge dates past 1999.

The West Memphis three were three friends who were convicted of the murder of three eight-year old boy scouts in 1993. The dark nature of the boys caused society to fear those who seemed to be "satanic believers".

The Zodiac killer has killed five people, that we know of, between 1969-1974. He supposedly has killed 20-28 people, injured 2, and he claims to have killed 37. Because he sent coded notes to the press and was still never caught, hysteria erupted within the people and the police.

2012 was the end of the Mayan Calender and many people believed it was the end of the world. Some people believed that a huge asteroid would hit and destroy Earth, and preparations for "Dooms Day" on December 21, 2012 were made by buying food and emergency fundamentals.
