If it were you, how would you approach Circe differently?

What was his audiences reaction as Odysseus told his tragic tales? What result do you predict his stories will bring

If Hermes had not instructed Odysseus step by step how to persuade Circe, how might the encounter have resulted?

What greek theme do YOU think was most apparent in this book?

Do you think this form of recounting his return from Troy is an effective way for the book to shift back into a previous time?

After living a year in luxury, Odysseus convinces Circe to let them return home, but before they could depart one of the crew members, Elpenor, breaks his neck. Circe tell them to travel to the House of Death and see the ghost of Tiresias.

Odysseus landed on the island of Circe, a witch goddess. She drugged some of the crew which turned them into pigs. Only Eurylochus, who'd stayed behind the group of scouts, avoided this fate and returned to the ship to tell of this sorcery. Odysseus sets out to save his men and Hermes, disguised as a young boy, instructs Odysseus to take a herb making him impervious to Circe's potion, pursue her with sword and make her swear to never harm him and his crew, then go to bed with her.

Odysseus and his crew arrived at the island of Aeolus, ruler of the winds. Aeolus gave him a bag of the wind, and set the western winds to blow them home.

Odysseus's crew were suspicious of Aeolus's gift, believing it to be a fortune of gold and silver. They tore the bag open and released the winds from all corners of the earth, generating a massive storm which pushed their ship back to the Aeolian island.

Favorite Quote

Odysseus's scouts discover a a Laestrygonian princess, who take them to her father Antiphates. The giants ate 1 of the 3 scouts, but 2 escaped. Before the ships could get out of range, the giants sunk all the ships. They feasted on the men. Only Odysseus's ship escape.

"Once they'd drained the bowls she filled, suddenly she struck with her wand, drove them into her pigsties, all of them bristling into swine-with grunts, snouts, even their bodies, yes, and only the mens' minds stayed steadfast as before."
