Quotes of her appearance:

Quotes of her Thoughts:

  • "She advanced, light, tall, very upright..." Mrs. Dalloway (Page 12)
  • "And for a second she wore a look of extreme dignity..." Mrs. Dalloway (page 17)
  • "...feeling herself suddenly shrivelled, aged, breastless, and grinding, blowing, flowering of the day, out of doors, out of the window, out of her body and brain which now failed..." Mrs. Dalloway (page 31)
  • "Here she is mending her dress; mending her dress as usual..." Peter Walsh (page 41)

My thoughts of Mrs. Dalloway:

  • "Exactly the same she thought; same queer look; the same check suit; a little out of the straight his face is, a little thinner, dryer, perhaps, but he looks awfully well, and just the same." Mrs. Dalloway (page 40)
  • "He's very well dressed, thought Clarissa; yet he always criticises me." Mrs. Dalloway (page 41)
  • "...he's enchanting! perfectly enchanting! Now I remember how impossible it was ever to make up my mind..." Mrs. Dalloway (page 41)

I think Mrs. Dalloway is a woman who has everything to make her happy. She has a husband in Parliament, wealthy income, a daughter, and has fun parties with other upper class families. Yet, she isn't happy. She lives in a world of color, but throughout the book she describes things that are grey. This hints the audience to her discomfort and unhappiness.

Quotes of other characters' thoughts of her:

Pictures:

  • "She's grown older, he thought, sitting down. I shan't tell her anything about it, he thought, for she's grown older." Peter Walsh (page 40)
  • "He was only just past fifty. Shall I tell her, he thought, or not? He would like to make a clean breast of it all. But she is too cold, he thought; sewing , with her scissors..." Peter Walsh (page 43)
  • "There was something always something cold in Clarissa, he thought." Peter Walsh (page 49)

Additional questions:

  • 1.
  • "For he had forty years experience behind him (92)"
  • "For no wthat it was all over, truce signed, and the dead buried, he had, especially in the evening, these sudden thunder-claps of fear (87)"
  • "For example, Lady Bradshaw (100)"
  • "For hours at a time, (Pray God that one might say these things without being overheard!), for hours and days he never thought of Daisy (79)"
  • "For he wore brown boots (84)"

2. They all are about other characters and not Mrs. Dalloway herself. They are all about experiences and things of the past.

3. By using the word 'for' it makes the sentence more explanatory in format. By using a different word, it would not have this same effect or same connotation.

Mrs. Dalloway Character Analysis

4. Mrs. Dalloway is a commentary on the limitations on perception. For example when different events unfold simultaneously and from different points of view. Like when Septimus sees Evans (93) or when porportions are discussed by Dr. Holmes (93).

5. This is representative of the whole work because it showcases Mrs. Dalloway feeling ashamed and embarrassed. This is similar to how writers might feel after their work is reviewed. It doesn't matter what the writer might feel or how they thugh they did, because the critics adn public decide whether literature is good or not.
