The climax (turning point) of the story is when Finley learns that Russ/Boy21 won't play unless he's wearing jersey number 21 which is Finley's number. Finley has to choose if he wants to sit out an let Russ play or if he wants to be selfish and play himself. While that is on his mind he also has to deal with Erin getting hit by a car.
The falling action of the story is when Russ starts playing basketball again and is starting to get back to normal. Erin is taken out of the hospital and moved without Finley knowing anything. Finley is upset that he doesn’t get to know more details about Erin's where about. He ends up going to the Irish Pride Pub to get some answers and gets in trouble with his dad and grandfather.
The rising action is when coach takes Finley to the Allen home (where Russ' grandparents live). Finley is told about what is happening to Russ and how he wants Finley to help Russ get out of this Boy21 dilemma. Coach tells Finley that he wants Russ to play Basketball for him. Finley figures out that Russ plays his position better. Erin and Finley break up during basketball season. The reader finds out that Terrell calls Finley white rabbit because of a movie they saw in class about a white basketball player. Terrel calls Erin Finley's lil’ baby, because it annoys her.
In the end Russ drops the Boys21 act is back to normal. While the morning of graduation Finley gets a letter from Erin telling him some information about what's going on and how she has an apartment that they can live together. She says there's a ticket for him so he can get on a train to get to her. Finley goes to the train station and says bye to his dad and grandfather. His dad puts something in his pocket and when he gets seated he checks to see what it was and it ended up being five hundred dollars in hundreds.
In the beginning everyone is introduced to the story and as the reader I get to get some background knowledge to everything. As an example, i’m told about Erin and Finley's relationship, and love of basketball. I'm told about some of the characters who are on the basketball team and of how coach and Finley's relationship. I'm told about some of the features of the characters so I can get an image in my mind what they look like.
My thoughts on the reading are that it was a great book. It had a great plot twist with Erin getting hit by the car. It completely changed the focus of the story from Russ/Boy21 to Erin. I loved the mystery of where Erin was after her family moved. It made me want to know where she was and how it would affect Finley. One part of the book I didn't like was Russ' reaction to his parent’s murder. It was weird to me and made the book boring to me. Other than that it was one of the best books that I've read in a long time.
Some literary devices in the book are on page 3 when Finley exaggerates to the reader. He says "Erin’s probably the best girls’ player in the state. “The next one I found was after the game where Boy21 played and showed everyone his real talent. Finley had left upset and Erin came out to talk to him. In his head he had used a simile, and he had said "I am acting like a baby...” He was comparing how he was acting to how a baby acts. Another one was when Finley and Wes were in Boy21's Room and listening to a CD. Finley had said "...I feel as though I’m in a trance or something...” He was comparing how he's feeling to how it feels to be in a trance. One of the other ones I found was after Finley went to the Irish Pride Pub to go and get answers about were Erin is. He said, "So I should just wait for Erin to contact me?” I say. “Do nothing?". He was being sarcastic when he said it (at least to me). His dad and grandfather knew that he wants to do something about this.
There were lots of conflicts in Boy21. Some of those conflicts were Russ against himself. Russ was trying to "find himself" after his parents murder. He was convincing himself that his parents were coming back to get him. When he was really finding a way to escape the fact that his parents are gone and One of the or conflicts is Finley against Erin. Terrel (another basketball player on the team) calls Finley White Rabbit and whenever Finley and Erin are together Terrel calls Erin Finley’s Lil Baby. Erin hates it when Terrel calls her that and wishes Finley would say something about. They get into an argument about it, because it happened all the time an Finley never does anything. A large conflict that happens is when Erin is hit by a car. The pain she is in is more than knowing. The people in the car drive off and break the law by doing a hit and run. A conflict coming from the before conflict is against Finley the Irish Pride Pub. The Irish Pride Pub is a dangerous group of people (otherwise known as a gang) and Finley wants to know where Erin has gone because she left and moved with no telling where. Finley walks in and talks to one of the most dangerous guys in the group. He's almost beat up or even killed.
There were multiple characters in the book. Some of these characters were Finley, Erin(Finley's girlfriend),Russ(aka:Boy21)Finley's Father, Finley’s Grandfather, Finley’s Brother, Coach, Russ' Grandfather and Grandma, Erin's Mother and Father, and Rod (Erin's Brother). All of these characters I would take as the protagonist of the story. This is because they all are nice and willing to help without a doubt. Some characters I would take as the antagonist of the story would be Terrel(the lead basketball player who makes fun of Finley, Erin, and Russ/Boy21), The Irish Pride Pub(a dangerous group of people and place). I would take them as antagonist because their cruel, rude, and do nothing to help the protagonist characters.
Boy 21 is set in the imaginary world of Bellmont. The conflict in the story is that there’s a boy name Russ who's a star point guard that every college scout wants. Russ' parents were murdered and are now living in Bellmont with his grandparents. Russ is taking the loss of his parents hard an starts calling himself Boy21 and believing that his parents are going to be coming back to get him from outer space. A point guard at East High School named Finley is told by his coach about what has happened and how Russ hasn't touched a basketball since his parent’s death. Coach wants Finley to go and spend time with Russ so he'll go back to normal and play for the East High School boys’ basketball team.
Boy 21 is written by Matthew Quick and published in 2012.The genre of the story is fiction.
