Two Conditions for Increased Media Dependence

Example #1, continued

1. When the number of media outlets and their degrees of function are high

-The media in the U.S. acts as an alarm system during national emergencies, as a tool for entertainment/escape, etc

2. When a society is undergoing social change or conflict

-People relied more heavily on media to provide information after the 9/11 attacks

3. Increased levels of boredom when we experience Wi-Fi connectivity problems, power outages, etc

Three Specifics in the Theory

Example #2

The greater the need for media

to understand our world,

the more dependent we are

1. Media operates in a given way

2. There is a distinct social system in place

3. There is a given audience that has specific wants/needs

Dependency Theory

Individuals' need to understand the world around them caused more dependence on media to provide information on the November 2015 terrorist attacks on city of Paris

Needs/Wants that Influence Media Dependence

Example #1

What is it?

2. Increased use for Entertainment/Diversion

By Morgan Statt

1. Need to understand the world

2. Need to act meaningfully in the world

3. Need to escape the world through diversion

  • Introduced by communications researchers Sandra Ball-Rokeach & Melvin DeFleur in 1976
  • States the idea that the more a person depends on having needs gratified by media use,

the more influence the media will have

How the Theory is Used

  • To examine the effects of media dependence as it applies to larger social systems

Social System
