The point of origin

Velocity of blood drops

This is the part where the blood initially came from and the most large pool of blood.

expiratory blood

1970s Blood stain analysis system

blood is splattered on a objet , as a result of breathing; this occurs when an injury is to the throat, mouth, or airway

Blood stain analysis in the 1970s used a system based on the velocity of blood drops at impact.

Low velocity impact splaters- blood dripping using gravity

Medium Velocity impact splatters- Slower than a bullet wound but faster then gravity

High Velocity impact splatters- Only created by bullets or fast machinery

drop patterns

characteristic patterns present when blood drips into standing, wet blood

Blood analysis definitions

After 1970's instead of the impact it is measured by the speed of the weapon that sent the blood drops flying

Accompanying drop- a small drop produced as a by-product of drop formation

Void- an abscence of blood in an otherwise continuous bloodstain or bloodstain pattern

Target- A surface onto which blood has been deposited

Insect Stain- A blood stain resulting from insect activity

Blood types

transfer pattern

There are 4 blood types A B AB and O and all of these blood types can be positive or negative, and also certain blood types match with of blood types

pattern created when a wet, bloody object comes in contact with a target surface leaving a pattern that has the features of an object making it useful for identifying the object

History of Blood Spatter

plasma

plasma the yellow liquid component of blood in which the blood cells in whole blood would normally be suspended

The first book used to study blood spatter is titled "Concerning the origin, shape, direction and distribution of the blood stains following head wounds caused by blows" and was published in 1895 by Dr. Eduard Pietrowski.

Expansion of Bloodstain Analysis

Red Blood cells

Herbert Macdonell started this expansion of this by writing "Flight characteristics of human blood and stain patterns", in 1971. He was also the person who had begun training scientists in bloodstain analysis.

Blood spatter was not legal evidence until 1955.

In 1983 Macdonell and a few other scientists created the International association of bloodstain pattern analysis. After this the blood stain analysis field began to grow
