The Great Depression was a result of the stock market crash of 1929. It was a period in the 1930's where people around the world were left unemployed and many banks and factories shut down because of it. Another factor intp the Great Depression was that people could not get used to the post-WWI inflation. Even after most countries recovered from the crash, the U.S. continued to have economic failures every month. In order to fight this, the American people voted Franklin D. Roosevelt into office, replacing Herbert Hoover.
"The sycamore leaves whispered in a little night breeze." pg. 16
This quote is an example of personification, because sycamore leaves cannot whisper.
" 'Red and blue and green rabbits, Lennie. Millions of 'em.' " pg. 16
This quote is an example of a hyperbole, because they will not actually own millions of rabbits, but a lot.

"Of Mice And Men" is set in 1937. It takes place on a farm near the Salinas River in Soledad, California.
Roosevelt put new orders into place, such as the Second New Deal, a radio address Franklin gave in the summer of 1935. Another thing that worsened the conditions on farms was the Dust Bowl, which wiped out many farms and work for Midwesterners. Another novel written by John Steinbeck, titled "The Grapes of Wrath," goes into detail about this event. The government lowered some of the tariffs on imports, which made them cost less. Before the Great Depression, big banks and buisnesses were regarded as leaders of the U.S. Now, most of the nation's trust is put into the government.
"Of Mice And Men" is a book about George and Lennie, George small and tempermental, and Lennie strong and mentally challenged. Together they travel from farm to farm to find work during the Great Depression.
They cannot stay at farms for long because Lennie has a penchant for holding pretty or soft things and animals and will not let go, often hurting the animal. Their ultimate goal is to get their own farm with their money, and when they get to the newest farm, they split the costs and almost get their farm with another farmhand named Candy. When they are almost ready to buy the farm, Lennie befriends the wife of Curley and accidentally breaks her neck, resulting in George having to keep Lennie from receiving torture from Curley by shooting him in the head.
