Bay of Pigs Timeline

1959

The July 26 Movement

led by Castro succeeds forcing Fulgencio Batista to go into exile.

January 1 1959, Fidel castro assumes power in Cuba.

1960

January 12 1960, U.S military bombers camoflauged as Cuban aircrafts drop napalm bombs on oil refineries and sugar cane fields in Cuba, burning 10 tons of sugar in Havana.

February 13th, Castro signs a trade aggreement in which the Soviet agrees to purchase 5 million tons of sugar over 5 years.

1961

April 17th 1961, the invasion began. 1300 trained Cuban exiles invaded the Bahia de Cochinos(also known as the bay of pigs.)

The Bay of Pigs Invasion happened three months after JFK assumed presidency.

1962

On March 29th 1962, 1172 men were put on trial for treason. All of them were jailed for 30 years.

All of the men were traded back to the U.S for $53 million

October 14 1962-November 20 1962, the Cuban Missile Crisis took place, where the Soviet Union had missiles directed towards the U.S and the U.S government had missiles directed towards Moscow and Cuba.

The U.S ended up making an agreement with the Soviet Union , where we would take our Missiles out of Turkey which were facing Russia, and never invade Cuba again.
