Checks and Balances

Checks and Balances

Judicial Branch = The Supreme Court

We use checks and balances to make sure not one of the three branches of government has more power than the other.

The Judicial Branch

Which Branch contains the House of Representatives?

  • Makes sure laws are carried out fairly
  • Federal court decides cases that deal with the Constitution, treaties, and national laws
  • The President nominates the Supreme Court justices, or judges
  • Senate approves justices
  • Justices stay in office for life

- They can make decisions without worrying about losing their jobs

The court system

Objective

SWBAT explain how the three branches of government create a system of checks and balances.

Which Branch approves laws?

House Members per State

What happens when someone wants to make a new law?

Schoolhouse Rock!

"I'm just a bill"

There are three branches of government in the United States:

1. Legislative Branch (Congress)

2. Judicial Branch (Supreme Court)

3. Executive Branch (President/White House)

Which Branch explains the laws?

If everyone likes the bill...

It becomes a LAW!!

Senate

Which Branch declares war?

There are two Senate members for each state.

First, whoever comes up with the new law, writes it down in the form of a "bill".

Which Branch contains the Senate?

Then, everyone in Congress (the House and the Senate), votes on the bill.

If Congress votes "YES", then the bill is sent to the White House for the president to review. If the president likes the law, he votes to keep it. If the president does not like the law, he will veto it.

There are two houses in the Legislative Branch
